300,000 Applications
Get ready, as the flood gates open tomorrow for the new .EU domain names when any man (and his dog) will be able to register a spanking new dot EU domain.
Who wants to take bets that the newest addition will be as undervalued as its BIZ and INFO cousins?
The .EU domains have been available since last year, but only to trademark owners.
The European Registry of Internet Domain Names (Eurid) is expecting the move to attract a lot of interest. More than 300,000 applications have already being processed.
"Nobody knows exactly how many registrations of new domain names to expect but the interest so far has been significant, so I think we will see several hundred thousand proud holders of brand new .eu domain names from Friday and onwards," said Marc Van Wesemael, managing director at Eurid.
Firms and citizens in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Britain have showed the greatest enthusiasm in registering .eu addresses. Belgium is ranked fifth, with almost 17,000 applications for a .eu web address lodged from the country and 1,400 Belgian .eu addresses already in use.
